If you want to save money while still having fun with your Warhammer 40K collection, you might consider buying units from a lower-cost armies. These include the Space Marines, Orcs, Adeptus Custodes, and Sons of Behemat. These are all good choices for the price-conscious wargamer. Below are some tips for selecting the best armies for your wargame collection.
Table of Contents
Sons of Behemat
There are many advantages of the Sons of Behemat army. The main one is their size. Even if you don’t enjoy painting miniatures, you’ll still enjoy pushing giants across the battlefield. The army can be made up of two or three units, which means that half of the army can be assembled from just one start collecting box. The other advantage is their low price, as they are made up of only two or three individual units.
Warhammer 40,000 and Mega Millions came out in 1987. The armies were based on the same universe, but their artifacts were different. The first edition of Warhammer 40,000 had a Mega-Gargant. The armies of the Mega-Gargants had parts of the Killer-Kan and their legs, so they could be used to build their arms.
Space Marines
As the gene-enhanced living weapons of the Adeptus Astartes, Space Marines are the most affordable 40k army to collect. Their battle gear is the finest available and their weaponry is devastating. Unlike other Space Marine armies, the Ultramarines can field their Primarch ancestor leader into battle. This makes them an excellent painting project and a cheap army to start with.
The space marines are very affordable to start collecting, and there are many new models to choose from. Generally, you can buy two squads at a time. Make sure you donate any extra heavy weapons to your other marines. Also, you can build your own devastators if you’re in the mood to save a few bucks. Just make sure to build them the old fashioned way, with missile launchers. They’re worth it!
You can get a fully-assembled detachment for as little as 1150-1220pts. If you’re going for a cheaper detachment, you could run out of the army at 1500pts. A good source for heavily discounted Space Marines is ebay. You can also find a cheap 2000pt army. Old sprues can also be found, but it’s not that easy to find one.
Orcs
As the cheapest army to buy and field, Orcs make for a great beginner’s Army. Orc Boyz are inexpensive melee infantry units that get bonus attacks when charging. Their special ability, Goff Clan Kultur No Mukkin’ About, grants them +1 Strength after charging and an extra hit on melee to-hit rolls of six. Orc Boyz can be taken in mobs of 30 models or more, and their aura abilities give them additional buffs.
Another alternative to orcs is Skaven. The Skaven batallion box is a good deal, and it includes a variety of models. While stand-alone Orcs are limited, when mixed with Gobbos, they can make an exciting army. And while they aren’t the most versatile army, they are the cheapest 40k army to collect.
Adeptus Custodes
The Adeptus Custodes is a relatively new army in Warhammer 40,000, and is a well-defined super-elite infantry force. They are not a huge army, but they are well-equipped with models that make them a formidable force. These units can be tooled to have a better armour save, or even an invulnerable save. This makes them virtually indestructible.
You can find the full list of available units in the Adeptus Custodes Forgeworld datasheet. The army consists of two types of units: the Legio Custodes and the Adeptus Custodes. The Custodes are the cheapest 40k army to collect. Their army is highly customizable. It’s not uncommon for a player to have several different models to choose from.
These troops are composed of warriors with a strong invulnerability save and five attacks in close combat. They also provide a massive buff to nearby Adeptus Custodes units, letting them reroll hit and wound rolls. In addition, they can use a Moment Shackle once per game. They also come with personal Relics that let them heal a little and make their next Stratagem cost zero CP.
