‘London Has Fallen’ was a well-received film, and while Aamir Barkawi is based on a real-life terrorist, there is a chance that his creators took inspiration from the real-life terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki. The Yemeni-American cleric rose to prominence in the terrorist world as a regional commander for al-Qaeda. In fact, the 7/7 assailants cited his lectures as their primary inspiration. However, the real-life terrorist was killed in a US drone attack, and it is unclear whether the film is based on a true story or fiction.

Anwar al-Awlaki may have been the inspiration for the plot

Anwar al-Awlaki is believed to have been the inspiration for the plot of London Has Fallen, the Netflix drama. He lived in Yemen’s Shabwa Province, which is a stronghold for Al Qaeda, as well as the traditional territory of the powerful Awaliq tribe. The tribal leaders offered to keep Awlaki under house arrest, but the talks were unsuccessful. In addition to the failed talks, an American missile strike in the province killed the deputy provincial governor, infuriating President Saleh and suspending the clandestine war.

The alleged plotters were inspired by sermons and articles written by Anwar al-Awlaki. Awlaki is an extremist and has claimed to be inspired by the American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. However, some suspect that Awlaki has always been a radical.

Awlaki left the United States in 2002. He expressed his belief that the United States was at war with Islam. During his time in Yemen, he was imprisoned for 18 months. Some of his American counterparts encouraged him to become involved in terrorist violence, which he has allegedly done. Moreover, his English-language exhortations to “jihad” were found on the computers of young plotters in Canada and Britain.

Anwar al-Awlaki had ties to al-Qaida. He once bought a battery for bin Laden’s satellite phone. The FBI opened an investigation into Awlaki in 1999 and closed it in 2000. Interestingly, Awlaki was one of the prominent Islamic imams in the United States.

The FBI had investigated Awlaki’s cell phone and mosque. The FBI also questioned his connections to al-Qaida. It’s unclear if the FBI believes that Awlaki had any contacts with the Chechen jihadist movement.

The plot was a combination of two men who were radicalized, angry, and found guidance from Al-Qaeda. Since 1998, the group has been encouraging Muslims to kill Americans as “knights of the prophet” in a holy war.

Awlaki’s YouTube channel contains several videos of Anwar al-Awlaki encouraging jihad. This material is reportedly used in more than a dozen terrorism investigations across the West, including English-speaking countries.
