Does QoS Really Reduce Ping?

Does QoS really improve the quality of your Internet connection? While QoS improves your experience in particular situations, it is not a universal solution for high-speed broadband connections, which are capable of handling all applications at once. A high-speed connection is therefore not a necessity for QoS. High-priority applications such as BitTorrent clients don’t necessarily benefit from it. But if you are concerned about ping, QoS is worth considering.

Restarting a router can reduce ping

To minimize ping, try restarting a router. If you notice an increase in ping after restarting, you may have overloaded the router or your internet service. You can also try changing the priority of some specific devices or apps. However, you must remember to turn off your router before restarting it again. This process helps the router to refresh the connection and reduces latency.

Changing the priority of your network connection may help to reduce ping. Try changing the network settings to allow only the most important programs and devices to use the network. To lower ping with QoS, try to disconnect some devices in your network, such as games. This will ensure smoother communication. Moreover, if you are gaming online, you should consider using a different network, like an Ethernet cable.

Setting up QoS for gaming

To set up QoS on your router, you must know the MAC address and IP address of your PS4. These addresses are located in the “View Connection Status” page of your router. Once you’ve found these, follow the instructions on the next page to set up QoS for gaming. Hopefully, you’ll see some reduction in ping. However, remember to keep this number in mind: the higher the MAC address, the better.

Using fq_codel to implement QoS

The new fq_codel (Fair Queue Algorithm) is a highly-efficient queueing system that sits between the TCP/IP stack and the network driver. It reorders a FIFO-queue in a smart way to squeeze in small streams and not let big streams lock up the queue. By doing this, it allows users to make the most of all of a line without losing any speed. As a side note, using fq_codel to implement QoS is not recommended.

Using fq_codel to effectively implement QoS reduces ping by up to 90%. Unlike DRR or SFQ, this system is transparently implemented in the network stack, meaning that it sits between the TCP/IP stack and network driver. It uses a stochastic model to classify packets, and gives a fair share of bandwidth to all flows. Moreover, the fq_codel add-on is compatible with Asus routers that support the Merlin firmware.

Class of service vs. quality of service

Essentially, a router’s QoS feature controls how the network allocates bandwidth. Using a quality of service network is like hiring a good triage nurse to direct patients to the right doctor. If you get run over, you might get several doctors while someone with a nail stuck in their hand may wait until one is available. Quality of service networks prioritize certain services and applications. The most important things get the most bandwidth and have the least ping time.

The difference between QoS and class of service is largely based on how information is organized. Typically, computers organize information into packets, much like the physical mail system. Often, this process takes a while because of the time required for the router to process the request. But, by using quality of service tools, you can significantly reduce ping while still providing a high-quality internet experience.
