Auburn squeaked past LSU with the help of some stellar pitching. Their defense held the Opposing team to three runs on five hits, and their offense was limited to just four hits and one run. Maddie Penta started and pitched six innings, giving up just one hit and striking out eight batters. In the bottom half of the inning, Shelbi Sunseri nearly tied the game, but her fly ball went over the left fielder’s glove.
The fifth inning was a key part of the game. Auburn scored four runs on four hits, with three of them coming in the first inning. The inning started with an infield single from Alyssa Rivera, who then stole second base and scored on a passed ball. The next hitter, Shelby Packer, reached base with a single and scored on a double by Shelby Cox. In the sixth he was joined by Makenna Dowell and Shelby Koepke. With a three-run lead, Auburn scored twice more on another sac bunt from the catcher. The runner who came in on a ground ball to the infield was Makenna Dowell.
After the inning ended, Auburn sounded out the opposition, scoring five runs. Two home runs by sophomore Sydney Cox and one from senior Aspyn Godwin put Auburn on the right track early on. They added two more runs in the second inning, four in the third, and one in the fourth. The Tigers totaled 14 hits and committed only one fielding error. There is no question that the hitters made the difference.
The Auburn varsity softball team won its final conference game on 10/4. The Tigers won 19-9. There are no ranked teams in the SEC, so this game was crucial for the team’s future. However, the results do not mean that this team will miss the tournament. They will be back for another season. It’s a good thing that there are still a few more months before the NCAA tournament.
Auburn is still on a winning streak, and the team’s offense is hitting well. The team scored four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Makenna Dowell led off with a double and scored on a pass ball from Shelby Packer. No one has hit more runs than the Tigers did in the fifth inning, and they finished the regular season with a win. But despite the win over the SEC, the Auburn team is still not close to the NCAA tournament yet.
The varsity softball team won their game 19-9 on Saturday, the last day of the SEC regular season. On Sunday, they will play Georgia State, which is ranked eighth in the poll. They’ll face Alabama, Georgia State, and Florida. There’s a chance that the SEC tournament will be held in Auburn. If they do, the game will be a good place for them to start.
