Blake Sims was released by the Toronto Argonauts on June 7, 2015. He joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 29, 2015 and was on the active roster due to injury. He was regarded as the #3 quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Blake Sims has been a fierce competitor from an early age. Alabama will start Blake Sims at quarterback against West Virginia on Saturday. Sims had backed up AJ McCarron last season but has not yet started a game. The Crimson Tide had been looking for a backup quarterback since AJ McCarron’s injury. But Sims is a better choice than McCarron. Sims has the ability to play in high-pressure situations and is a better fit for Alabama.

The Bengals have signed veteran quarterback AJ McCarron. McCarron has been with the Texans for six seasons and is currently serving as Deshaun Watson’s backup. He started one game in the Texans’ regular season finale, but otherwise has been an understudy for Watson. McCarron went to Alabama and won two national championships. In 2014, he threw for 3,487 yards and 28 touchdowns as a redshirt senior. He then signed with the Atlanta Falcons before the 2016 season and then signed with Tampa Bay prior to the start of the 2017 season.

While Sims started every game for Alabama this season, he only had one year of experience under center. He may not have been consistent enough to warrant an NFL roster spot. Sims’ last week was spent preparing for the Senior Bowl. This all-star game for college seniors provides NFL teams with an opportunity to evaluate each player in person. In addition, he will have a chance to showcase his talent in camp.

After being undrafted in 2014, Alabama quarterback Blake Sims has been touted as one of the best players in the draft. He is 5’11 and 218 pounds, and has a solid arm, but lacks the instincts and accuracy of Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. However, Sims’ upside has been highlighted by his ability to run and make plays outside the pocket. Sims has the size and elusiveness to be a solid backup quarterback in the NFL, and the Eagles were willing to draft him as such despite the lack of a quarterback prospect in this draft class.

Although Sims had his fair share of struggles as a running back at Alabama, he improved during his college career. Despite this, his arm is only average, and his numbers aren’t as impressive as Wilson and Brees. Still, Sims is capable of deep throws and showed that he could be effective down the stretch. The question remains, will Sims be a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback or an effective backup?

Alabama has been very successful in recruiting quarterbacks, and Sims is no exception. He was a top-rated quarterback in the class of 2021, and was considered a five-star recruit by the college. Sims will be a starter for Oregon, and he will likely be the starting quarterback for the Ducks this season. Sims is the same type of player Sims was when he was at Alabama in 2014, but now he is a quarterback in the NFL.

Originally recruited as a running back, Sims was able to make some plays outside of the pocket and has enough arm strength to threaten defenses over the top. With his elite running ability and elusiveness, Sims may switch to receiver or return to the running back position. He worked out as a receiver at Alabama’s pro day and has shown enough promise to warrant NFL back-up consideration. Sims isn’t the first quarterback to switch positions. Julian Edelman and Antwaan Randle-El both played quarterback and became good receivers after switching positions.

Sims’ arm strength is an issue. While Sims’ arm strength is average, his numbers don’t reflect that. His arm strength is far below that of Wilson and Brees, which both boast above-average arms. But his ability to throw deep is impressive, as he broke multiple 20-yarders during his senior season. And he has shown some elusiveness in the open field.

Sims spent four years on the bench at Alabama before earning his starting spot as a fifth-year senior. The quarterback has a similar height to the Super Bowl MVP, and he’s a full inch and a half shorter than Wilson. His size also suggests he could be successful as a running back in the NFL. However, he only played five games as a tailback as a redshirt freshman in 2011.
