The second book in the series, “Cloud Strife Hates Sephiroth”, begins with Cloud confronting Sephiroth in the Mako Reactor on Mt. Nibel. Sephiroth claims that Cloud has killed him, but Cloud dismisses this as a lie, claiming that he has fought a better opponent than he is. Cloud is still troubled by the fact that he lived, even after having fought Sephiroth.
During the game, Cloud’s memory is unreliable, and at times he will spontaneously remember things from his past. Sometimes he will collapse, cradling his head. But there are also events that Cloud cannot remember. This is because Sephiroth has used this unreliable memory to manipulate his own mind by telling Cloud that his past was a fiction created by Shinra, and he is not a human. He eventually leaves, but later suffers from Mako poisoning.
Although Cloud knows that Sephiroth is the source of black materia, he hates him to the point of obsession. In fact, he hates Sephiroth to the point of obsession, which explains why he doesn’t think much of him.
