If you have a Dragonborn amulet, you should not sell it to Calixto. Selling it to him will only make it a Necromancer’s amulet. However, if you wish to sell it to a Necromancer, selling it to Calixto is your only option.

Dragonborn’s amulet will never be sold to Calixto
Calixto’s House of Curiosities is located in Windhelm, east of the Gray Quarter. Inside, you’ll find a strange amulet. If you choose to buy it, you must talk to Jorleif before it is sold to Calixto. The amulet is a very powerful item, and it will protect the player from many types of attacks.
The strange amulet can be bought from Calixto for 500 gold, but it can’t be analyzed. It’s a ritual item used in the ritual to bring back a dead woman, and it’s also used to collect body parts. If you sell it to Calixto, it won’t be sold or dropped, so it will remain in your inventory forever.
If you don’t speak to Calixto in the beginning of this quest, you’ll be prompted to do it a second time. When you arrive at Calixto’s house, you’ll notice that his door is locked. The door won’t be unlocked and Calixto will not be there to receive the Strange Amulet. Without a Strange Amulet, you can’t get the Necromancer Amulet, which is required to complete the Civil War Questline.
If you’re able to catch Calixto, you’ll be rewarded with a rare chest containing several goodies. In addition to the amulet, you’ll also find the enchanted Necromancer’s Amulet. If you’re using a low-graphic setting, you may not be able to see the blood trail leading to the chest.
If you’re unable to find Calixto, you can talk to Jorleif. He’s a helpful guide, but will be confused by your amulet. However, he’ll eventually point you in the right direction. You can also talk to Viola Giordano, the author of pamphlets, who will give you background information on the killings that took place in the town.
The quest journal also says, “Get assistance from Jorleif.” Jorleif’s assistance won’t come in handy here, so instead, show him the butcher’s flyer instead. He will direct you to Viola. He will also be able to help you find the true murderer – if you can find him.
Selling it to Calixto is the only way to turn it into a Necromancer’s Amulet
In an early version of the game, selling the amulet to Calixto will make it unusable, and you must agree to this. If you’ve completed the quest before, the only way to turn it into a necromancer’s amulet is to give it up to him. After doing this, you will receive 500 septims. However, this bug is not present in the latest version of the game, so you need to use console commands to complete this quest.
When you reach the end of the quest, you will be rewarded with a Necromancer’s Amoulet and a key. You’ll need this key to unlock Calixto’s chest, where you can obtain the Necromancer’s Amulelet. Using the key to unlock the chest, you can also use it to unlock Calixto’s museum of curiosities. The chest also contains embalming tools and the first part of Calixto’s journal. Reading this journal will reveal that Calixto was driven mad by the loss of Lucilla, and that his necromancer rituals were an attempt to bring her back to life.
If you want to turn your amulet into a Necromancer’s amulet, you must convince Calixto that the amulet belongs to Wuunferth. If you’ve done this, he will try to sell it to you for 500 Gold, but you’ll have to convince him to sell it. It is important to note that if you do not agree to this, he will shut down his museum permanently.
If you don’t want to do that, you can still try selling it to Calixto. You can go to Calixto’s house in Jorlief, and use the key found on his body to open it. He’ll then ask you to sell the amulet to him.
Once you have the Blood of Nilsine, you can talk to Calixto to change the amulet’s appearance into a Necromancer’s amulet. Once you have done this, you can go back to Nilsine’s house and get the necromance amulet.
Accusing Wuunferth of being the murderer causes him to reject your suspicions
You will need to confront Wuunferth in order to prevent the Butcher from killing Arivanya. This is the preferred way to solve this case, because he will initially insult you for suggesting that he is a Necromancer, but once you prove that you’re not a Necromancer, he will reveal some interesting details about the killer and leave you to continue investigating the murder.
Getting the amulet back from Calixto
The first step in getting the amulet back from Calixt is to speak to Calixto. He can be found in the House of Curiosities in Windhelm, east of the Gray Quarter. He will attempt to purchase the amulet for 500 Gold, which you should refuse. However, you can get a heads up by talking to Jorleif, who is also a shopkeeper.
The next step is to pickpocket the amulet back from Calixt. If you manage to pickpocket the amulet, you can sell it to him again for 500 gold. However, you cannot enchant it after selling it to Calixto. If you cannot find Calixto, you can look in Hjerim to see the amulet. It is next to the “Beware the Butcher!” pamphlet. If the amulet isn’t dropped, you can still sell it for 1000 gold. However, you must be careful not to pickpocket a Dragonborn – he may not drop it.
After you’ve returned to Calixto, read the pamphlet and talk to him. He will tell you a story about the amulet and offer to sell it to you. If you miss this part of the quest, he will skip over the next step. You should then talk to him again to find out what happened to the amulet.
In the case of a guard, you should try speaking with Jorleif. He will ask you about the amulet and about the butcher. Depending on what your goals are, you might have a chance of catching up with Calixto. This is a difficult way to get the amulet back, but if you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll be rewarded with the amulet and get back in good grace.
The final step in getting the amulet back from Calixto is to kill the killer. Calixto will try to run towards the town of Hjerim, but you should not allow him to do so. Luckily, there are guards in the city who can assist you in destroying him and gaining the amulet.
After the court mage has given you the information about Calixto, it is now time to talk to him. You can do this by interacting with him in the wardrobe. Once you do, he will get offended and provide you with an answer about the amulet. He will also reveal the murderer’s pattern. Then, you can go to the Stone Quarters at night. This is where you’ll run into the killer, and if you catch him there, you’ll get the amulet back from him.
