How Does a Sandstorm Kill People?

The conditions for a sandstorm are perfect for rain storms. In 525 B.C., 50,000 Persian soldiers were killed in a sandstorm in the Thar Desert. Since then, 1.6 million cattle and sheep have died in sandstorms in China. Sandstorms are dangerous because the dust can get into your eyes and lungs. They also result in a lot of destruction.

Archeological digs like this are often fascinating as they provide evidence to support theories that have been popular for centuries. Many years ago, archeologists thought that they had found the bones of a Persian army that had perished in the Sahara desert. The army’s fate was unknown, but competing theories were posited as to what happened to it.

Herodotus wrote about a Persian army of 50,000 men marching into the desert, but we never hear about them again. Archeologists in Italy recently uncovered evidence of the army, including a bronze sword, silver bracelet, and an earring. The Castiglioni twins believe that the army was buried by a sandstorm, and they think they found the soldiers’ remains under the ground.

Sandstorms have killed 1.6 million livestock in China

In recent months, Mongolia and China have been hit with fierce sandstorms that have destroyed crops and killed livestock. In the first quarter of 2021, Mongolia suffered losses of over a million livestock, mostly sheep and goats, and over 8,000 people and 2,000 households were affected by these sandstorms. During these storms, air pollution levels in northern China and Mongolia exceeded 20 times the healthy limit.

Increasing sandstorms in China have also contributed to increasing levels of ozone pollution, which can lead to respiratory diseases. Since 1978, the Chinese government has developed a strategy to fight sandstorms, including planting 66 billion trees along its border with the Gobi Desert. The Great Green Wall is an important barrier, anchoring loose dirt and preventing small sandstorms from gaining speed and spreading across the landscape. As a result, Beijing residents are forced to stay indoors when air quality reaches dangerous levels.

Sandstorm dust can end up in lungs

There is a risk of breathing in sandstorm dust if you spend long periods outside. This dust can linger in the air for days and penetrate the lungs, causing severe respiratory conditions and even fatalities. Sandstorms are common in desert regions, with more than one-quarter of China desert. The desertification of adjacent areas is a growing concern for scientists. Although sandstorms are common in spring, the current season is notable for its strength and frequency.

Even though the dust in the Phoenix dust storm is fine, the particles can still get into the lungs and cause respiratory problems and asthma attacks. Exposure to dust can also lead to a disease called Valley Fever, a fungal infection of the lungs. While the disease is not usually fatal, it can cause flu-like symptoms and require medications to cure. More severe cases of Valley Fever can lead to meningitis or chronic pneumonia.

Sandstorm conditions are ideal for rain storms

In some regions of the world, sandstorm conditions are ideal for rainfall. This type of weather phenomenon occurs when winds and saltation process break up soil and sand particles into small pieces. The fragmented particles become a sandstorm or a duststorm. Sandstorm conditions are generally the most common during the months of April and May. During the same time, the NWC sees the highest number of sandstorms.

The dust aerosols in the atmosphere warm the air to a temperature of 700 hPa or higher. At the same time, temperature profile rises along dry adiabat in lower atmosphere. During the sandstorm, the temperature profile is higher in the middle and lower tropospheres. The sandstorm occurs at 12:00 UTC and at 20:00 LZT. This climate change is the most likely cause of rain storms.

Sandstorms can cause car accidents

A recent sandstorm in Utah has left eight dead and ten injured. Four of the dead were children, while two others were adults. A 22-vehicle pileup was caused due to lack of visibility and high winds. Drivers should slow down and exit the highway as soon as possible. If the weather is bad, avoid the emergency lane and look for a safe place to pull off the roadway.

The Utah Highway Patrol said a recent sandstorm has been the cause of multiple pileups on Interstate 15 near Kanosh, Utah. Multiple ambulances were called to transport the victims to hospitals. Five of the people killed were in the same vehicle. The other two victims were in a second vehicle. The Utah Highway Patrol said that lack of vegetation may have contributed to the severity of the sandstorm.

Sandstorms can cause flash floods

The destruction caused by sandstorms is a global problem. While they are unavoidable in some parts of the world, the most deadly are found in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and China. Countries that experience these disasters include Algeria, Iran, the UAE, Sudan, and Afghanistan. Because they are a natural hazard, the United Nations has been putting into place various policies to mitigate the impacts of these sandstorms.

There are several reasons why sandstorms can cause flash floods that kill and injure people. Flash floods can happen in just minutes and may be caused by a flash sandstorm. These storms are extremely unpredictable and can begin without warning. They can be as difficult to control as full blown blizzards. In one accident, a sandstorm caused a collision involving 22 vehicles. The resulting pileup killed eight people.
