Despite being the largest state in the United States, no state’s name begins with the letter “E”! This is true of states like Arkansas, Missouri, and California. Only 14 states begin with the letter “A.” Interestingly, no state name ends with the letter “E.” Fortunately, these are not all of the most obscure states. In addition to the “A-free” states, there are also 14 other non-A-letter-containing states, including Missouri, Mississippi, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

”Q” is the only letter that does not appear in any state names in the United States
If you have ever wondered about why some states are named “Arizona,” “Texas,” and “New Mexico,” you might be surprised to know that each of them is named after a letter. As for the letter “Q,” it’s not intentionally absent from state names. In fact, it appears in the names of three states – California, Nevada, and Utah. There are also five major territories in the United States, as well as various islands.
New Jersey

Maine
In a fun fact about the state of Maine, the letter “e” is missing in its name. While Maine was once part of Massachusetts, the state was confirmed as part of the United States after the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution. It wasn’t until 1842, however, that the final border with British North America was determined. Despite this fact, Maine remains one of the coldest states in the Union.
Idaho
The word “Idaho” first appeared in the halls of Congress, in the pages of the Weekly Pioneer and Democrat. A report from the Senate and House Committees on Territories mentioned that it was difficult to pronounce the name of Pike’s Peak Territory. This is not the first time Idaho has been mispronounced, though. A few decades ago, it was even mistakenly called the state of Wyoming.
Alaska
The word “Alaska” may be misconstrued to mean “Alaska”. It is not capitalized in the geographic sense, but it is informally used in casual speech. In a sentence, it may be used to mean “the state without the letter E.” But, in other contexts, the word may be used to mean any of the 49 other states.
