Wapta Icefield
The Wapta Icefield, Peyto Glacier and surrounding area are part of the Canadian Rockies. The Peyto Glacier is at the northern end of the Wapta Icefield and the Mistaya basin, 100 km north of Banff, Alberta. The Peyto Glacier has been the subject of extensive research since 1966, and it is currently the site of a major glaciological research station.
The Wapta Icefield consists of the Peyto and Bow Glaciers. Bow Glacier retreated more than 1,100 meters from its peak in 1850 to the present, leaving a lake at its terminal moraine. Peyto Glacier is undergoing significant retreat and may disappear completely within the next 30-40 years. The Hector and Crowfoot Glaciers are also accessible from the Icefields Parkway, but they are not affiliated with the major ice sheets.
