In the past few years, I’ve used a variety of different programs to play movies on my PS4. I’ve streamed from my USB drive, used a DLNA server to play MKV files, and even used subtitles in VLC. Here are my top tips to use VLC on PS4.

Using a USB drive to stream to a PS4
The PlayStation 4 can’t read the NTFS file system, which is why you cannot use your NTFS-formatted USB drive to play videos or music. You will have to format the USB drive to exFAT or FAT32, which will allow the PS4 to recognize and play the videos and audio files on it. Here are some steps to format your USB drive before using it to stream VLC to your PS4.
You must first create the right folder on your USB drive. The music folder contains all your audio files, while the video files should be in a folder called “Videos”. The photos folder can be anywhere you’d like, but they shouldn’t be on the root of the USB drive. You can use any folder name for them, as long as it’s named properly. You can also use the USB drive as a storage device, as it has an SD card slot, which will enable you to transfer files without any hassle.
Using a DLNA server to stream to a PS4
Setting up a DLNA server on your computer is the first step in using your PlayStation console as a media streamer. You can also use a Mac or a Linux server as a media server. You must be using a device that supports the DLNA protocol to connect to a PS4. You can choose from many types of devices that are compatible with DLNA, including smart TVs.
There are several DLNA-capable media servers, including Sony’s PS4 Media Server. The universal media server, for example, is compatible with all DLNA-capable devices, including the PS4. You can use a DLNA server to stream content to a PS4 using a network cable. DLNA-capable devices support the same file types and media formats as your PS4 and can be connected to a PS4 via DLNA.
Watching MKV files on a PS4
If you’ve recently purchased a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One S, you’ve probably wondered how to play MKV files on your device. The PlayStation 4 now supports MKV playback via USB cable or DLNA, as well as MP4 and AVI. In addition, there are several other file formats supported on the PS4 – you can see a list of these on the PlayStation website.
To convert MKV files to another format, first import the MKV folder into the online MKV converter. Then, choose the format from the dropdown menu “Format” and choose the “PSP/PS3”. From here, you can change some video parameters. Generally, larger input values mean higher quality but larger files. This is a good way to watch MKV files on your PS4 without any quality loss.
Using subtitles in vlc
If you want to enable subtitles on PlayStation 4 video files, you’ll need a program that supports soft subtitles. The internal media player on the PS4 supports many file formats, including the popular MKV container. To use external subtitle files with the PS4 media player, make sure that they are in the same directory as the media file. SRT subtitle files work on the PlayStation 4 as well.
Generally, you’ll need to use the Aegisub software to export the subtitles to SRT format, which is supported by the PS4 system. Then, you’ll need to place the video files on a USB stick so that the PS4 will recognize them. Next, you’ll need to enable Closed Captions. To do this, open the Media Player and click on the Options button, and select Closed Captions. If you skipped step nine, this option will not appear.
