Song of the Deep

Hans Hass’s Undersea Adventure

Born in Vienna in 1919, Hans Hass grew up in a wealthy family and became a well-known lawyer. His interest in the underwater world began when he went on vacation with a friend, Guy Gilpatric, on the Riviera. In 1938, the two met and Hass was hooked.

During the 1940s, Hans Hass began to study aquatic invertebrates and bryozoa and finished his doctoral dissertation in zoology in 1944. After completing his thesis, he married Hannelore Schroth, a schoolteacher from Babelsberg. The couple had a son named Peter, and were married in 1945. Their children had been born after the marriage.
