The Moorings

In Portmagee, Ireland, Mark Hamill landed in a pub and poured a Guinness. The Moorings in Portmagee is now known to StarWars fans as a filming location. Luke Skywalker and his crew filmed scenes from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi at the Moorings.

Gerard Kennedy, the proprietor of the Moorings guesthouse in Portmagee, was asked to help provide accommodation for Star Wars crew members. He initially thought the crew were visiting to film a puffin documentary. However, when the crew needed 180 rooms, he figured something was up. The Lucasfilms logo was on the crew’s business card and he recognized it right away.

The Skellig Rocks in County Kerry were also used in the films. This rocky island, located just 12 miles from the Wild Atlantic Way, was the site of an early monastic settlement. Monks lived on the island until the 13th century. Skellig Michael is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, but filming was limited. Because of the World Heritage status, the production team had to recreate the location elsewhere.

The Forest of Dean

Located on the shores of Lake Como, Villa del Balbianello is home to the National Trust of Italy. It was also the site of Anakin and Padme’s wedding. The Villa is now owned by the National Trust of Italy.
