After a lackluster first quarter, the Colorado and Washington game got more interesting toward the end. The teams both went small, but the Buffaloes capitalized on this by feeding their talented scorers. Jabari Walker had four triples on the day, and PJ Fuller and Cole Bajema each had two steals. Then, with a little over a minute to go in the third quarter, Colorado went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-6 lead.
The Buffs’ offense was off. Washington had a strong first half but struggled to execute its second half offense. In the first half, the Buffs had a seven-point lead and were down seven with eight minutes to play. The Buffs’ offensive plays stopped moving around and the guards were forced to take tough shots going 1 on one. The Denver defense played a good game, but their defense was sloppy. Then, the Pacers made two straight turnovers, forcing the defense to make a big play.
In the second half, Colorado made the Huskies work for every yard. They ran the ball well in the second half but were unable to capitalize on their possession. The Huskies’ defense was poor in the third quarter, allowing the Buffs to score a few points on fourth down. But the team’s defense couldn’t stop the Buffs on fourth down. Their big men combined for only three points in the first half.
Despite the fact that Colorado was down by seven points at the end of the first half, the Blazers’ offense made a late push in the game. On the third down, the Huskies got a contested three pointer from Cole Bajema. And in the final eight minutes, Washington was down by six. In the final seconds, Brown drove in for a layup to make it a 71-71 score.
The Huskies had plenty of time to run for the win, but the Buffaloes’ post play and defense forced the Washington to bleed. The Washington Huskies’ defense failed to contain Tristan de Silva, who scored 22 points on 9/15 shooting. Meanwhile, the UW’s defense did a great job containing Evan Battey and Jabari Walker. However, it wasn’t enough to stop the Bruin.
The Huskies were unable to score, despite their strong offensive play. While the Denver defense had been a strong matchup for Washington, the Colorado team was able to make the decisive run in the final minutes. The game’s final moments were characterized by an incredible ending. In the first half, the Colorado led by seven points. At halftime, the Buffs cut the lead to six, but the Buffs had a good shot and a good defensive effort.
