Cycle of Hatred
If you are new to the World of Warcraft books series, you’ve probably already started with Cycle of Hatred. The first book in the series, it’s written by USA Today Bestselling Author Keith R.A. DeCandido and is set one year before the events of the World of Warcraft saga. While both series books are highly recommended, you may want to start with Cycle of Hatred before moving on to Rise of the Horde and Lord of the Clans.
After the events in Shadowlands, Anduin Wynn and the Horde Warchief Sylvannas Windrunner are new to their roles, and they must deal with the fallout from Sylvannas’ betrayal of her people. Jaina Proudmore tries to prevent a war between the Alliance and Horde, but multiple assassinations threaten their efforts. Meanwhile, Garosh Hellscream plans to invade Jaina’s city. Together, they must stop the invasion and protect their people from their former leader, the Banshee Queen.
Warlords of Draenor
This novelization focuses on the alternate history of Warcraft, which precedes the expansion, Warlords of Draenor. The plot follows the story of an orc from another universe, sent into our universe to open a portal to let the Burning Legion through. In this World of Warcraft books series, you’ll meet characters that you’d never have met, including Garad, the son of Garad.
The Last Guardian tells the story of Khadgar and the First and Second Wars. It’s a good start for fans of World of Warcraft, because you’ll meet him in the in-game city of Shattrath. Afterward, Tides of Darkness picks up this storyline by explaining the events of the Second War. The novel also features some of the cast from the World of Warcraft movies.
The next novel in the World of Warscraft books series takes place shortly after the Third and Fourth Wars. Khadgar must lead the Alliance through the Dark Portal to defeat the Horde’s paladins and their consort, Sinestra. In addition to the story of Anduin Lothar, it also includes the stories of other characters such as the druid Arya. The story is not without its tragedies and triumphs, and readers will be thrilled to know how the world of Warcraft unfolds.
War of the Ancients trilogy
While the storyline in the War of the Ancients trilogy is essentially the same as that of the game, there are some differences. This story is set before the events of Rise of the Horde, which means that readers should read those books before starting this trilogy. Similarly, the third book in the series, Curse of the Worgen, is set after the events of War of the Ancients.
In the War of the Ancients trilogy, three heroes are called upon to stop the Burning Legion from destroying Azeroth. These heroes include Krasus, a dragon mage, Rhonin, a human mage, and Broxigar Saurfang, an Orc war veteran. Their quest involves altering the timeline of history, which could “rip Time apart” and free the Old Gods from their prison. The war in the trilogy may also spill into the future.
Nightborne: Twilight of Suramar
If you’re a fan of World of Warcraft and the comic books that tie into it, then you’ll want to check out Nightborne: Twilight of Suramar. This second book in the series is written by Matt Burns, who previously wrote the New York Times bestselling World of Warcraft Chronicle: Volume I. In this comic, Elisande must decide between her loyalties and the demands of the Burning Legion.
The main questline in Nightborne: Twilight of Suramar includes eleven chapters and requires you to acquire an honorable reputation with the Nightfallen before continuing. In some chapters, you’ll have to earn revered or exalted reputation with Nightfallen to unlock the next chapter. In others, you can take on side quests and get a reputation boost. As you progress through this series, you will be rewarded with a good reputation from the Nightfallen.
