World of Warcraft Render Scale and MSAA

Performance overhead

If you’re having trouble playing World of Warcraft on your PC, it might be a good idea to reduce the render scale setting. First, we should understand that World of Warcraft uses three different rendering APIs. The first is the legacy version DX11, which is supported by all games released since the game’s initial release in 2004. DirectX 12 is the latest version and is the preferred option for most players. However, this option comes with a large performance overhead in all configurations. It’s roughly ten to fifteen percent slower than DX11, which is more than enough to notice in gameplay.

AdaptiveRes

Blizzard has removed the Fullscreen option from World of Warcraft and switched to a new system, Render Scale. This new feature allows players to adjust the resolution and frame rate of their game. Once enabled, AdaptiveRes will lower the resolution until the desired frame-rate is reached and then increase the resolution after a certain amount of time. MSAA

The MSAA option in World of Warcraft requires a graphics card that has sufficient memory bandwidth and hardware bandwidth to enable this feature. As the hardware for MSAA is housed in the ROPs, only midrange graphics cards are able to use this feature. MSAA is found in the Advanced tab. This option is intended to clean up the images from game objects in motion. In contrast, Post-Process AA tends to make images look over processed and blurry, which isn’t ideal for screenshots. Post-process AA
